Youth Ambassadors share their experience and advice as apprentices – #NAW2024

It’s National Apprenticeship Week 2024 and in celebration, two of Youth Employment UK’s Youth Ambassadors have shared their stories about why they chose an apprenticeship, why they’re a good option to consider, and their top tips for anyone considering an apprenticeship in the future.

Why I chose an apprenticeship

I’m an Apprentice Build Manager for Wilmott Dixon. I attended a technical college with 13 diverse work experience programmes – I got exposure to a range of different industries, with some that I enjoyed and some that I didn’t. From this, I found my passion for construction.

I chose an apprenticeship because I thrived in the workplace and enjoyed getting that hands-on experience. Traditional education wasn’t for me and I found a hands-on, practical approach works best.

I’m in the second year of my apprenticeship and continue to grow and learn new things. I’ve gained support, knowledge and guidance from those working in my industry, and I now have a deeper understanding of construction.

Why I love doing an apprenticeship

  • I’m debt free!
  • It’s connected me with a diverse network of colleagues, mentors, industry professionals and has enhanced my learning experience
  • I love that everyday is different, with new people, new challenges and new projects. I am looking forward to continuing this adventure.

My top tips about apprenticeships

The advice I’d give to anyone considering an apprenticeship is:

  • Find a field you’re genuinely interested in and passionate about
  • Take advantage of networking opportunities for valuable insight and it will open doors for you
  • Don’t be afraid to take initiative! This demonstrates you are ready to learn.
  • Don’t be hard on yourself. You’re on a learning journey so you won’t be expected to know everything on day 1. Mistakes will happen and that’s ok – these challenges and setbacks are opportunities to learn and grow

Why I chose an apprenticeship

I started a Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship 2020. I was in my final year in college and decided to take a year out to decide what I wanted to do. As I didn’t want to go to uni, I wasn’t sure what to do.

I came across options I could get into via an apprenticeship. The work experience drew me to it! I had no option for work experience in secondary school and felt I was at a disadvantage to those who had.

It was great working in a professional environment, learning both theoretically and practically from those in the industry. I got to apply my knowledge through hands-on experience, and gain a nationally recognised qualification that I could use to gain further qualifications or move into other industries.

Why I love doing an apprenticeship

Youth Employment UK’s 2023 Youth Voice Census says that apprentices are some of our happiest workers, with 73.6% of apprentices stating they felt prepared for their next steps. This reflects my experience of my apprenticeship!

  • It can be tough, particularly leading up to assessments, but I got support from instructors and ex apprentices.
  • It taught me to be resilient and how to work under pressure. This in turn boosted my confidence.
  • I have expanded my professional network and met my mentor who is helping me explore my future options.
  • Since finishing my apprenticeship, more training options have been available and I continue to learn.

My top tips about apprenticeships

  • Go for it! It takes hard work and dedication, but it’s worth it – you will develop so many skills.
  • Ignore the myth that apprenticeships are for those who aren’t academic – this isn’t true. There are diverse opportunities available and every young person should consider it.
