I was delighted to read that the government are holding a consultation on the misuse of the term “apprenticeship”. The plans to legislate the term so that it can only be applied to real apprenticeship programmes that are monitored for their quality is good news.
We know that the term “apprenticeships” can sometime have a negative image with young people and employers where they are deemed poor quality. This is largely down to the misuse of the word, and some organisations badging employment or training programmes incorrectly.
It is imperative that apprenticeships are seen as a high quality pathway for young people and YEUK would welcome any legislation that can protect them.
“Last week, the Government launched a consultation asking for evidence of the misuse of the term ‘apprenticeship’ and comments on our plans protect this term in legislation.
The measure, which Government intends to introduce as part of the Enterprise Bill this Autumn, would prohibit any person using the term ‘apprenticeship’ or ‘apprentice’ in relation to any course or training in England unless it is a statutory Government apprenticeship eligible for Government funding.
