Working in local government – meet Renée, Internal Audit Professional Apprentice #LocalGov

Renée Marston is an Internal Audit Professional Apprentice at the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. Here’s her experience of working in local government!

I started my role in September 2021 and since then I have been involved in a whole range of internal audits across the council including areas such as Pensions, Procurement and Housing.

A typical day for me would including checking and answering emails, attending meetings and depending on what stage I am at on an audit, it could include speaking with officers, testing controls and data and writing reports and briefs. I also occasionally attend training sessions both focused on my job role and personal development.

Something that has pleasantly surprised me about local government is the impact that your job role can have on the local and wider community, even if your role does not enable you to work directly with them.

My advice to people who are looking to get into local government would be to explore the company website, look on their social media channels to see if any events are coming up, and get involved. Also speak to other people, perhaps on LinkedIn, who are currently working or have previously worked in local government. Many people are happy to share their experiences and answer any questions you may have.
