Madeleine Burch is an NGDP Graduate Trainee at the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Here’s her experience of working in local government!
I started the NGDP (National Graduate Development Programme) at the Royal Borough of Greenwich in November 2021, with my first placement in the Continuous Improvement (CI) Team! If there is a project that seeks to drive change in the organisation or works across multiple directorates, the CI team will provide project support and leadership.
So far, I’ve supported the development of our next corporate plan, helped design a staff champion model for our equality, diversity and inclusion programme, and supported the Women’s Safety Taskforce with improving safety and access to services for women. Much of the work has been strategic and policy-focused, and I’ve been given real responsibility and ownership from the beginning!
I recently started my second placement in the Forward Thinking Team in Health and Adults Services, supporting the delivery of the department’s new change strategy. I’d definitely recommend the NGDP as a route into local government as you’re able to learn about the different elements of a local authority and ultimately find out which bit is for you.
