Lara Kennedy is a Project Support Officer at Cornwall Council. Here’s her experience of working in local government!
I joined Cornwall Council in March 2022 through the Kickstart scheme as a way to gain experience of local policymaking alongside studying part-time for an MSc in Conservation.
During my time at Cornwall Council, I worked within the climate team, focusing on carbon reduction and providing support to the Carbon Neutral Cornwall team. My main focus was writing a report looking into the background of agricultural and fisheries policy and the possibilities for cutting emissions in this sector.
As well as my main project I produced a crib sheet on nature-based solutions for tackling Climate Change and a policy report summarising the findings of the recent IPCC report on Mitigation of Climate Change.
Through this work I have been able to develop my writing skills, especially pieces that are targeted at a wide audience. I have enjoyed learning about climate policy and strategy and I look forward to further developing my knowledge and skills.
Since the end of my Kickstart Scheme I have stayed on in the Council in the role of Project Support Officer for the Carbon Neutral Cornwall Team and I am continuing to develop new skills within local policy and Climate Change.
