Fiona Hunter is a planning officer at Braintree Council with an MSc Town Planning Degree Apprenticeship. Here’s her experience of working in local government!
What did you enjoy most about your Degree Apprenticeship in Town Planning?
I have enjoyed learning the theory behind my work role, and having the opportunity to apply this whilst studying.
How hard was it transitioning from apprentice to full time employee?
As I had been a full time employee prior to entering the degree apprenticeship, I found the transition fairly easy. I was glad to be back to 5 days a week on my role as planning is a busy department.
How did your apprenticeship act as a springboard for what came next?
So far, it has enabled me to proceed with working towards becoming a chartered town planner with the RTPI as the degree is accredited.
What in your opinion is the most widely misunderstood thing about apprenticeships?
I think that people think of apprenticeships as being only for 16-18 year olds, and on a low level of pay doing a lower level role. There are a range of apprenticeships up to master level degrees.
Why would you recommend an apprenticeship to someone looking to start a career?
It is a good way for your employer to support you through education, and enables you to have a real world application of the theory that you are learning throughout the education.
What advice would you give to anyone starting out as an apprentice?
It can be an adjustment to balance both working and education, however it is important to remember that work are giving you the time to earn your qualification and you should use it as such.
