The management programme with Youth Friendly Employer Red Carnation Hotels is a great route into hospitality careers for graduates and non-graduates alike. Carlota shares her story, along with useful career tips.
Carlota is on a management programme with Red Carnation Hotels. She graduated from university and really wanted to do a management programme. She loves the hospitality industry and loves caring about people, so she was really pleased to successfully apply for a management programme with Red Carnation Hotels.
Red Carnation Hotels management programme: Meet Carla
Carlota’s tips for getting the most out of a career in hospitality
Carlota says it’s great to come into a hospitality opportunity with the mindset that no request is too large and no detail is too small. You’re in the business of saying YES when guests have a request, and caring about all the little details to make that guest’s stay memorable and perfect!
A great way to give a luxury service, says Carlota, is to personalise everything to guests. The same way you deserve to be treated as an individual, guests appreciate it when they are treated as unique inviduals, too.
How can you tell if you’d enjoy working in the hospitality industry?
“Daily interaction with guests is what gives me joy and keeps me going”
If you’re the kind of person who recharges their batteries and gains energy from bringing happiness to others, a career in hospitality could be a great fit for you.
One thing that Carlota has really appreciated about joining the family-owned Red Carnation Hotels brand is that you are counted as yourself and treated as a unique individual with your own character, not just one more member of staff.
Carla says that every day is different – you might wake up with a plan for the day, but there will be unique surprises every day in hospitality careers, so you end up with lots of variety and can grow your skills and confidence in whole new ways all the time. No-one ever wants to feel like they’re stuck in a rut in their role.
One thing that Carlota especially enjoys is that everyone on the team is motivated by the same goal in their daily work. She feels that spending lots of time together makes the team feel like really close friends or family.
“The hospitality industry and working in hotels gives so much back to a person on a daily basis.”
What are the benefits of the Red Carnation Hotels management programme?
You have a chance to change properties within the two-year programme, so you get a taste of life at different hotels.
You get additional opportunities, like attending leadership conferences or special hospitality industry events.
You get assigned a mentor, and you can meet them or have a catch up with them whenever you like. They can help you find solutions to any issues you might have on a daily basis. They can also help you with any change of direction you’d like to pursue, because it’s fine to try things out then see what you most enjoy and are interested in.
The management programme is a useful career booster. You even get a chance to meet up with the Managing Director once every quarter. It’s a great opportunity to talk about current events and trends in the organisation.
A management programme is not just like a normal job, says Carlota. After reading about the close-knit team and the opportunities to learn so much as you train, you may decide you agree with her!
