What are supported internships?

What is a supported internship?

A supported internship is a work-based study programme that helps young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) into employment. It offers a unique mix of learning and on-the-job training.

As a supported intern, you would complete a work placement with an employer, have a personalised study programme, and get support from a qualified job coach. The job coach will support you and teach you the skills you need to be successful in the workplace.

The supported internship work placement can last from 6 months to 1 year and most of your time will be spent in the workplace gaining experience and learning.

Who can do a supported internship?

Supported internships are for people aged 16 – 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Are supported interns paid?

Employers aren’t required to pay supported interns because it is a work experience opportunity.

The supported internship will provide you with skills and experience, to support you into a paid job after your course. If you need it, you’ll also learn CV and interview skills, and how to find and apply for jobs.

Do you have to pay for a supported internship?

No, you won’t have to pay to do a supported internship. The cost is covered by your school/college and local authority.

If you need extra financial support, you can apply for Access to Work funding. This funding can be used to cover the cost of travel, extra support, or specialist equipment that you need for the supported internship.
