What are Higher Technical Qualifications?
Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQ’s) are technical/vocational qualifications that have been developed with the needs of employers at the heart. Employers have been key in the development of HTQ’s, with the aim to plug skills gaps. Here is some information about them:
- They have been developed by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (iFate)
- To be considered a HTQ, they will have the Quality Mark symbol
- HTQ’s are Level 4 and 5 technical qualifications
- They are primarily education-setting based, taught by industry experts
- Suited to school leavers (18+)
- Based on employer led standards, similarly to apprenticeships or T-Levels
Examples of HTQ’s
Level 4 – Approved vocational qualifications, including Higher National Certificates or Certificate in Higher Education, and others
Level 5 – Approved vocational qualifications including Higher National Diplomas, Foundation Degrees and others.

HTQ’s allow learners to enter their chosen profession or progress on to higher education and study.
By taking a HTQ, you will gain foundation skills to top up with further study, or go straight into employment in your chosen field.
You can claim support to fund your HTQ, including tuition fees and maintenance loans.
