It’s Employability Day 2023! Here’s a few ways you can build your employability skills as a Young Professional…
What are employability skills?
Employability skills are the core skills you have that are useful in any job. You might also know them as ‘soft skills’ or ‘transferable skills’, meaning you can be transferred across jobs.
Employers look for these skills because they show you’ll be able to thrive in the workplace, no matter what experience or qualifications you have.
Build your skills with Young Professional training
Developing skills such as communication, self management, teamwork, problem solving and self belief are key ways to grow as a Young Professional. These employability skills will be useful, whichever career journey you choose, and you can build them with free Young Professional training.
You can work through the modules about life, work, study, and your needs and choices at your own pace. All you need to do is create an account and you’ll have free access to the course (and all other courses too!)

When applying for jobs, employers will be looking for employability skills. You can show them off in your CV, but they’ll also be looking for them in interviews. You can use the advice in our Careers Hub to learn how to shine in your CV and interview, and how to show you’re the best person for the job.

You can build employability skills through life and work experience. You’ll build them naturally every day when communicating with different people or entering new situations, but you can also find opportunities to boost them even further.
Look for opportunities such as volunteering roles, work experience, job shadowing, short courses and events that will give you the chance to develop your skills in a professional environment.
With experience under your belt, you’ll be able to show employers how you’ve built and used your employability skills, and that you have the passion to develop yourself.
