Unlocking talent, fulfilling potential

Social Mobility

Justine Greening today set out her plan for improving social mobility through education. The over arching ambition being to leave no community behind, to put a real emphasis on the range of places where resources are needed most starting with Opportunity Areas.

“We have a national mission to level up opportunity across this country and build a fairer society, one that will guarantee a better future for the next generation. Talent and hard work alone should determine how far people can go in life, whoever you are, wherever you are from”.

4 Life Stage ambitions are put forward:

  1. Close the ‘word gap’ in the early years
  2. Close the attainment gap in school while continuing to raise standards for all
  3. High quality post -16 education choices for all young people
  4. Everyone achieving their full potential in rewarding carers

Ways of working:

The report explains that:

  • There will be a central focus on identifying and spreading ‘what works’, putting evidence at the heart of everything we do; embedding and extending successful reforms; developing the evidence base further; and spreading best practise to where it is needed.
  • Building lasting success through partnership. Asking key partners whether employers, business, educators, or civil society, to step up and join a united coalition which will rally behind this plan and these ambitions to unlock potential for all.

“This plan is a call to arms: we want to ensure our education system truly makes our country one where – for the first time – there is equality of opportunity for all. Improving opportunity for the next generation of young people is one of the great challenges of our time; everyone must play their part. But the prize is huge: a country in which talent and potential are what matters. A country where everyone can be at their best”.

The report acknowledges that there is no quick fix or silver bullet, that education alone will help social mobility.
