UKCES – Careers of the future report

Yesterday YEUK took two of our brilliant ambassadors to the launch of the UKCES Careers of the future report.

The piece of research completed by UKCES aimed to highlight the areas where we can expect to see job growth.  The purpose of this information is to help inform careers conversations with young people.

Data is ever important in today’s complex world, understanding information and what that can mean to us as individuals allows for informed thinking.  Our two ambassadors are passionate20141211_140553 about careers education and the world of work. They want to see all young people benefit from good quality information and found the launch and the report quite useful.

Three young people had been invited to speak at the event, two of which are current apprentices who spoke eloquently and passionately about their experiences when it came to making career choices.  One of the apprentices had felt forced into an academic route as she was “clever” and had to find her voice to challenge that, she is now happily studying a mechanical and electrical apprenticeship with Nestle.  The other ambassador had completed his first year of university before breaking out into an apprentice, now earning and learning he felt  that this pathway suited him much better.  The final guest is still in 6th form but feels from his own efforts to gain work experience alongside his study’s that he is able to make a more informed choice about the decisions ahead.

We sense that there is some positive change afoot with organisations like UKCES, Plotr and iCould championing information for all.  Lets hope this gets filtered to the right people who can help young people understand what that means for them.

Nyasha is going to be doing a write up of the report to share with our young members in the coming week.

Until then you can read the full report here.
