Taking the Confusion out of Career Choices
Knowing what to do when you leave school can be a confusing business. Depending on your situation, you might find that you fall into one of two categories: either you get people giving you advice left, right and centre, or maybe you find yourself receiving no guidance at all.
If you are lucky enough to receive some friendly advice, however well meaning, it often doesn’t actually tell you a whole lot or seem to be very grounded in the real world. Someone might tell you that you need to go to university to get a good job, but is that always the case? Another person might tell you that you can be whatever you want to be, but although this sounds very nice, you are left wondering how many people actually get to become astronauts
“Follow your dreams” and “do what you enjoy” are quite often where careers discussions will start, but what if you don’t have answers to these questions or you know you like space and science but haven’t got any further yet? There are some other big questions that need answering too: are there actually going to be any jobs for me at the end of my training? How much do they pay? What other similar jobs are there if I find that I can’t go into this?
Labour Market Data
The good news is that there are answers to these questions. Although the phrase “Labour Market Data” might not sound particularly thrilling, what it can do for you is really exciting. Good
Labour Market Data focussing on the area where you live can give you a great idea about what jobs are actually out there, how much they pay, whether they are expected to grow or decline over the next few years, and what level of education you will need to do that job.
We have teamed up with the Labour Market Data specialists – Emsi – to put together a series of infographics, each of which looks at a different career route you might like to think about, and each of which incorporates insight into these careers such as the number of jobs, expected growth, salaries, and regional hotspots. We’ll be looking at Business and Administration today, followed by Childcare and Education tomorrow, Health and Science on Wednesday, Transport and Logistics on Thursday, and finishing up the week with a look at Digital occupations.
We hope you find these useful, and that the confusing business of what career to do may begin to become a little clearer.
