Supported Internships with Ixion

Ixion are part of Shaw Trust, one of the largest charities in the UK, and together they believe in fairness and equality and that everyone should have an opportunity for rewarding work.

We all need support when starting a new job or earning a new skill. That’s why Ixion and Shaw Trust provide supported internships to help you to develop your skills, knowledge and confidence. A Supported Internship is an opportunity to take your first steps into the world of employment, build skills in the workplace, gain qualifications, and get a paid job!

To do this, Shaw Trust has a network of over 4,000 ‘Disability Confident’ employers in the UK who they work with to provide these internship opportunities.

What is a Supported Internship?

Supported Internships offer a unique mix of learning and on the job training with employers. They usually last for a year, with the opportunity to complete 3 different placements.

The employers you’ll work with have committed to support and nurture your aspirations of moving into paid employment. They include Nando’s, Superdrug and Tesco, and many more!

You can find internships in a range of different roles including customer service, maintenance, catering, housekeeping, concierge, retail, horticulture, admin, and transport.

The goal is to help you find and stay in employment.

Who can do a Supported Internship?

A Supported Internship is a study programme aimed at young people aged 16 to 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and want to move into employment but need some extra support

Job coaches

Once you have started the supported internship programme, you will be assigned a job coach. The job coach will support you and teach you the skills you need to be successful in the workplace environment. The role of the job coach is to help you make the transition into the workplace.

Skills development

The focus of the Supported Internship is to build the skills and experience you need to help you gain employment.

You’ll have the opportunity to study towards a Pearsons Workskills Entry Level Three or Two awards depending on your needs. The qualifications explore work related skills and behaviours and selecting and applying for jobs.

Functional Skills is also delivered as part of the curriculum if you don’t already have Level 2 Maths and English qualifications.
