Recap
Here are some of the key messages and resources our guest speakers shared during the webinar.
Dean Giles – Head of Learning and Development at Haven (Bourne Leisure)
- Self-reflection is key – reflect on what you enjoy, what you are good at, and your biggest strengths. Also think about skills you may be weaker in and you would like to develop – take advantage of opportunities to develop these, so you can continue to improve.
- Take advantage of opportunities to meet and mix with a whole range of different people – developing cultural awareness is important.
- Be brave! Push yourself out of your comfort zone, and you will develop and grow!
- Be curious and inquisitive, and keep learning!
Carl Knight and Vicky Decamp from the National Citizen’s Service (NCS)
Grow your strengths with the range of opportunities with NCS! These include:
- Away from Home Experiences: there are one of three different experiences you can get involved in – spend five days away from home, having fun, learning about yourself, and growing your strengths.
- Local Community Experiences (coming soon) – Have a positive impact, meet new people, and learn new skills! You can take part in social action projects and volunteering in your local community.
- Online Experiences – You could take part in a range of innovative online experiences to boost your independence, resilience and employability skills, from the comfort of your own home!
- UK Year of Service (coming soon) – a 9-12 paid placement delivering impact to communities across the UK. Open to 18-24 year olds.
Jacqueline Weeks – Coaching Psychologist at Vise Mental Fitness
- Think of your ‘mental fitness’ – make sure you are taking an active recovery during the summer, have a rest, do things you enjoy, do what you need to do to relax! BUT – make sure this is balanced. Set out to achieve something every day, no matter how small.
- Reflect on times you have achieved something you’re proud of, overcome a challenge, or dealt with a stressful situation.
- Check in on yourself regularly.
- Reflect on your day – you could reflect on your day whilst brushing your teeth! What did you achieve/what are you proud of?
- Remember that your value is not based on a grade – no matter what results you get (if you have completed exams), they do not define you. Focus on your journey so far!.
