What is a National Insurance number?
Your National Insurance number is unique to you – it’s a bit like a reference number that ensures your records are kept with your name only.

- Save , print and share a PDF version of your National Insurance Number confirmation letter (with no need to call HMRC or wait up to 15 days for a confirmation letter)
- Keep your National Insurance number safe in your Apple Wallet (with functionality for Google Wallet to follow for Android devices)
- Access tax calculators, claim tax refunds and track communication with HMRC
The app will require you to sign in with a 6-digit PIN, a fingerprint, or facial recognition, so your information will be kept confidential and secure. Just make sure you don’t tell anyone your password or National Insurance number to keep them safe!
How does the HMRC make student finance and uni applications easier?
When applying for student loans or any kind of other loan or benefits, you’ll likely need to provide your National Insurance number. The HMRC app can be handy for anyone completing university applications. If you’re aged 16 to 21, you’ll need your National Insurance Number for applying for graduate roles, seasonal work and any kind of employment, too!
