Severn Trent has been named Corporate Employer of the Year in the Good Youth Employment Awards.

This prestigious award recognises the large employer that has made great strides in developing and innovating their youth employment practices and activities embodying the Good Youth Employment Standards. As part of this, they are committed to developing strategic and quality early careers opportunities all the way through the Explore, Experience and Employment stages of a young person’s career journey.

Outstanding Outreach

It was noted during the awards ceremony that Severn Trent has engaged over 10,000 young people in their Explore activities. In the past 12 months, they have been involved in career talks, career events, job application preparation, mentoring, and extracurricular activities.

We know that quality is as important as quantity, and Severn Trent has most certainly delivered. They are focused on ensuring that activities:

  • Support underrepresented groups by engaging with third-sector organisations and education establishments
  • Provide opportunities to stay in touch and build long-term connections
  • Get young employees involved in the design and delivery of their work

Using Every Opportunity

It’s not just their early career outreach that shines. Over 1,000 young people have been supported to access short work experience, workplace visits, and job shadowing.

Their hard-working team have doubled the number of workplace visits this past year, with dedicated staff ensuring there is thoughtful support, phone calls, briefing packs, and inductions to help young people through what can be a daunting transition point.

Severn Trent shows best practices right through to their early careers programmes, onboarding 200 young people into apprenticeships, graduate schemes and paid internships.

It was noted that their targeted work and support for underrepresented groups continuing is clear to see, with their addition of a ‘New Talent Network’ of young employee representatives bringing youth voice and feedback into the conversation.
