What to expect on results day
On results day, you’ll likely go to your school or college to collect your results. You may also be able to view them online or request that they are mailed to you. It is best to check with your school/college before results day to check how they will provide your results.
When you collect your results your friends and teachers will also be there. You’ll get an envelope of paper that shows the grades you received for the subjects you studied. We recommend that you look at your results at the school/college so that you can talk to a teacher/careers advisor or school careers advisor if you have any questions or concerns.

What to do if you don’t get the grades
If you don’t receive the grades you hoped for, don’t panic! No matter what grades you get, you will always have options.
You may still be able to do your chosen next step, but you also may need to look at other options. Speak to a teacher/careers advisor or call your chosen college/university to discuss things further.
If you’re hoping to go to university but didn’t get the required grades, you may still be able to get a place through clearing. Visit UCAS for more information about how clearing works and how to get in touch. Read: Can you get into university with low grades?
If you’re unhappy with your grades or you think there is a problem, speak to a teacher or member of staff who will be able to help you with what comes next. You may be able to retake your exam or appeal your grades to have them graded again.

Key things to remember
- Your grades on results day do not define you. If you did get the grades you wanted, then congratulations. If you didn’t, don’t lose hope – you still have plenty of options to continue your studies or get into work. You also have teachers to help you so make use of their help when you see your exam results!
- Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone has a different journey and different goals. Just because you’re doing something different to someone else, it doesn’t mean it’s the wrong thing. If it’s the best step for you and you want to do it, then that’s all that matters.
- Celebrate your hard work. You’ve worked hard and kept going through what was likely a stressful time. Make some fun plans to celebrate getting your exam results.
