Globetrotting Assistant Technical Specialist Kelsey attends amazing events as part of her high flying role in the cleaning industry! She shares some of her top reasons why she loves her job.
There is a lot of pressure at a young age to have a picture-perfect life. Although I’m sure that’s the same for all ages. You spend your formative teenage years working for grades in hopes that you can shine a light on yourself even for the 2 minutes of “look at what I’ve achieved”.
Even now, you see posts on social media, or you have conversations over a coffee with friends the same age and you have an exchange of achievement, and await the praise, the excited questions, and why not, you’ve earned it! I had the excited posts on Facebook by friends congratulating me on my entry to university, I went for celebratory drinks when I started placements, was asked hundreds of questions about the modules I was studying, but, the same cannot be said when I revealed that I had started working in the industry.
Praise soon turned into “why?”, Facebook statuses stopped, and believe it or not friends didn’t care to ask why I was getting so freaked out about the red cloth being used on the restaurant table! Why was that? I was working full time, I was providing for myself, putting a roof over my own head, and I was happy.
Unfortunately, this story is a familiar one for many people. We are brought up to recognise caps, gowns and briefcases as the attractive successful side of the working world, seldom are we taught to recognise that the people helping keep our schools, shops, hospitals and workplaces clean have successful careers.
Why I’ve loved my career in the cleaning industry
- I wanted to help create safer environments
- I wanted to help give people opportunities
- I enjoyed working alongside hard working people
- I wanted a career in an industry that was trying to solve environmental issues
- I wanted a career where I could develop
- I wanted to work in an industry that was diverse and vibrant
- I wanted a career where I would be listened to
I hope to spread the news of the industry to young people, explaining to them about all of the different opportunities within the industry as well as helping young people overcome barriers they face in the current climate.
As a younger cleaning professional I have been asked many times what can be done to attract more young people into the industry.
Now, I’m no marketing expert, I do not profess to understand the psyche of onboarding people, but what I do know is that the industry has given me everything that I wanted in a career.
