Production Chef Apprenticeship With The Royal Navy: #CreateYourFuture Opportunity

Travelling around the world, your job will range from cooking for the ship’s company on board warships or Royal Marines on land operations, to serving a fine dining experience to politically influential VIPs and Royalty.

The Royal Navy represents the United Kingdom worldwide, forging new alliances and maintaining old ones. Being a Caterer in the Royal Navy is a career that is literally miles from anything you could do at home.

At this job you will:

  • Take responsibility of ordering, receiving, and accounting for provisions to sustain the menus you write
  • And when there’s a good chance you could be at sea for months at a time, the role of Caterer becomes about a lot more than food
  • Be at the centre of keeping morale high and health at its optimum

    Things to consider

Training and development continue throughout your career with the Royal Navy. It takes place in two distinct environments: at onshore training facilities and on-board operational ships. When you join you complete 10 weeks of basic naval training, followed by 27 weeks of role-specific training, focusing on:

    • Different styles of catering to match the diverse requirements of the job
    • Food hygiene
    • Health and safety
    • Catering accountancy
    • Stock control

Desired skills

The Royal Navy will give you skills. We’ll develop your abilities, train you to be the best, show you how to achieve your goals and give you recognised qualifications.

Personal qualities

  • A keen interest in food and hospitality
  • Calm under the pressures of a busy kitchen
  • Team player
  • Ready to help crewmates on operation

To be a successful Royal Navy Caterer, you’ll need commitment, enthusiasm and the desire to consistently produce great food. Conditions are hot, busy, and pressured, so you need to be well organised and a real team player.
