We’re the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. We champion historic places to help people understand, value and care for them. We are excited to share with you an opportunity to complete a Digital Support Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship over the course of 18 months at Historic England, based in our busy Digital Engagement Team at our Swindon office. (With a blend of time in the office and remote working possible)
You may already understand the value of heritage to the local economy, to the communities living nearby and to people who visit heritage sites, however applying for an apprenticeship with us means you can contribute to the work we do at Historic England to help protect, enhance and reveal heritage for everyone.
As part of our Digital Engagement Team, as a Junior Tester you will support the digital delivery team in testing Historic England`s nationally significant corporate website against pre-determined acceptance criteria. The role will involve conducting manual testing, raising and tracking defects and assisting in documentation. This role would suit someone who has some knowledge of basic coding and would like to develop that interest into a career within software development.
What will you be doing?
80% of your time will be spent in the workplace, and 20% of your time will be spent off the job, completing a training programme specially designed for your apprenticeship with a recognised training provider. This learning may be delivered via in person workshops, in the workplace or by online delivery.
You will learn from experienced colleagues who will support you to gradually take on the following responsibilities through the duration of your apprenticeship
1.Carry out manual testing on features of the Historic England corporate website as instructed by the Product Owner and Senior Test Analyst.
2.Raise and track any defects and issues.
3.Communicate with internal stakeholders and the Product Owner for clarity on requirements.
4.Support the Senior Test Analyst in specifying testing scope, approach, and coverage during the discovery and requirements phases.
5.Work as part of a multidisciplinary agile team, providing feedback and raising issues that need immediate attention.
6.Collaborate with the development team to ensure requirements are understood.
7.Using our own IT systems for day to day administration, project development, programme management, data communication and archiving tasks
8.Using Microsoft Office 360 products including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS-Teams
9.Use of Azure DevOps, Umbraco (Content Management Systems) and other tools
10.Opportunities to learn about other aspects of web development (such as design, coding, automated testing and User Experience)
What will you learn?
In training you will learn the background knowledge that will help you to understand the bigger picture of work, including:
1.How to become a valuable member of an Agile delivery team
2.Various methods of software testing e.g. Manual testing, smoke testing, regression testing etc
3.Risk analysis and defect management
4.How to correctly measure the impact of a defect and its severity and communicate to the wider team
5.Effective writing for the creation of test scripts and team communication
6.Working safely online
What will you be able to do in the future?
This apprenticeship will give you knowledge skills and experience that will greatly enhance your future career prospects. Once you have successfully completed your apprenticeship you will have gained 18 months of work experience and a solid grounding in the process of software testing. Those completing the Digital Support Technician apprenticeship will be recognised for entry onto the BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, Register of IT Technicians confirming SFIA level 3 professional competence. Those completing the apprenticeship can apply for registration. While we cannot guarantee an offer of a permanent post within Historic England at the end of your apprenticeship, we are committed to your future and providing you with a solid foundation of skills and experience.

-Level 2 English and Maths will need to be achieved, if not already, prior to taking the end point assessment.
