Headlines for Young People aged 16-24
The ONS has released the latest Labour Market Overview covering the months of September 2024 – November 2024.
- Decreased employment: There are 3,704,000 (50.4%) young people in employment, compared to 3,744,000 (51.8%) this time last year, representing a decrease of 40,000 (1.4%).
- Increased unemployment: There are 628,000 (14.5%) young people who are unemployed, compared to 530,000 (12.4%) this time last year, representing an increase of 98,000 (2.1%)
- Increased economic inactivity: There are 3,024,000 (41.1%) young people who are economically inactive, compared to 2,949,000 (40.8%) this time last year, representing an increase of 75,000 (0.3%)
- Decreased vacancies: There are 812,000 vacancies, a decrease of 118,000 vacancies from this time last year (930,000).
These headlines demonstrate a combination of trends pointing towards a struggling job market with a decline in vacancies, with this month’s figures showing the lowest recorded vacancies since March-May 2021, where they stood at 765,000.
