Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward and delivering solutions for our transport infrastructure to meet the demands and requirements of our customers and to ensure that we’re ready for the 21st century and beyond.
The Highways and Traffic apprenticeship is an exciting three-year developmental programme for people who want to be involved in the design of traffic infrastructure as well as the management and assurance of design elements on our road network. London’s road network carries by far the greatest volume of traffic of all modes. Not just people but also goods, materials and essential services including our emergency services.
Our Engineers in Highways and Traffic focus on the development and implementation of engineering solutions to ensure that our diverse road users and different modes of travel are catered for and can continue to move about and and assets that form the foundation of our transport network’s building infrastructure.
We are looking into the future as well in the area of autonomous vehicles and other associated technology. This could mean designing for the interaction of these vehicles with the road environment, our signals equipment and road users. We have a massive part to play to ensure this interface happens efficiently and you could play a part as a Highways and Traffic technician in supporting this work.
As a Highways and Traffic Engineering apprentice, you’ll work with of our teams and assist in designing transport infrastructure which could include cycle lanes, improvements to active travel, transformational highways schemes like Elephant and Castle gyratory removal or Silvertown tunnel, bus priority schemes and improvements to junctions to make them safe and accessible for our customers. The Mayor’s Transport Strategy for London guides us in what measures we design and implement on London’s Roads.
On this programme, you will develop valuable skills and gain a broad range of industry experience by taking the first step on a career path in engineering and the future of London’s roads.
