This role has a starting salary of £23,576 per annum, based on a 36-hour working week. This role is a 42-month fixed term apprenticeship opportunity.
We are excited to be recruiting a Civil Engineering Senior Technician Apprentice (Level 4), to work as part of the Traffic Operations Team here at Surrey County Council. This role is based in our Leatherhead office with hybrid working arrangements available.

About Us
The Traffic Operations Team is key to ensuring the smooth operation of the Highway network in Surrey. The team is responsible for the Design, refurbishment, operation and maintenance of over 850 Traffic Signals, CCTV cameras and other roadside intelligent systems, whilst also assisting in the management and operation of incidents and planned events that take part on the road network in Surrey.
Our busy team is made up of a number of both technical and administrative staff, working together to manage our diverse asset, supported by our maintenance contractor. You will be working in a technical position, as part of the traffic signal refurbishment team to deliver a £3m annual programme of signal replacement / refurbishment.
Please note: This apprenticeship is only available for those who will not be enrolled in another government funded programme as of 1st September 2024 and do not possess a qualification at a higher or the same level as this one in the same subject. About your Apprenticeship
We want this apprenticeship to be an opportunity for you to gain experience across a wide range of duties putting you in the best position to succeed in your apprenticeship qualification and take the first steps on your career journey! In this role, you will:
  • Work as a part of a wider technical team
  • Be part of the team delivering the £3m per annum refurbishment programme
  • Be introduced to the systems used to develop, design and manage schemes, this will include training in specialist software packages including Autocad
This position offers the opportunity to develop technical skills in the world of Intelligent Transport Systems. After a period of suitable training, you will be required to attend site visits, contractor meetings, on-site commissioning, whilst developing the skills to eventually undertake the project management of your own signal refurbishment schemes. You will also be required to work with other areas within the team, to develop an understand of intelligent systems design and maintenance.
We won’t be expecting you to jump in and be able to do this all from day one. You’ll first go through an induction period allowing you to get used to the office and the team. As you gain more confidence in your role, you’ll be supported to do more and more!
As you progress through your course, you’ll have 1 day per week to solely focus on your apprenticeship work, the remaining 4 days of the week will be assisting the team with day do day duties and responsibilities.
As your qualification comes to an end and you begin to turn your eye to the future, we have a fantastic support programme in place that will put you in the best position to take the next step on your exciting career journey. Our desire is for all our apprenticeships to be the first step on a long and successful career journey within SCC.
If you do not hold an English and Maths GCSE graded A-C or 4-9, you will be required to complete these in addition to the apprenticeship in order to achieve the apprenticeship qualification. Additional tutoring and support will be provided.
