Are you thinking about becoming a teacher? Read (or listen to) Daniel’s story…
My name is Daniel Wallace, I am a Reception Class Teacher and I work at Angel Oak Academy in Peckham.
I think that great teachers change the course of people’s lives and every child should have a right to have a great teacher.
If you have someone who is engaging, who cares, and who feels like the children in the room matter, you will have children who grow up to be confident adults and who are sure of their self-worth and the value they can bring to the world.
That starts with having a teacher.
I started working with a charity called Debate Mate and I had an amazing class. They had a lot to say and they were very funny and opinionated. I thought ‘You know what, I could do this. This is a career for me.”
Before I knew it I was a primary school teacher. I think it’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. Being able to teach a range of things, meet new people, and support children with learning has been a great journey. I wouldn’t change it for the world. It’s great to see when one little thing motivates students, and it grows and grows.
When I started teaching, a large part of me thought how do I make a career out of this? There aren’t many people who look like me in the teaching profession, but things are changing. I would say to anyone that no matter where you come from, you can become a teacher. If you want to do it, then do it.
