Transitioning from school to further or higher education at college is an exciting time filled with new experiences and new opportunities. It can also be daunting for new students. You will be leaving the structure of compulsory education and moving into an environment where you are responsible for your own learning. You’ll need to learn how to motivate yourself and manage your own time and workload. You’ll also have a new campus, new teachers, and new peers to get to know.
If you are prepared and know what to expect, becoming a college student can be a fun and rewarding experience. You will be studying a course you’ve chosen and have the opportunity to make new friends. Read on for a range of resources to help new students in the West Midlands understand what to expect. What can new students in the West Midlands expect when starting college in September?
If you are due to start college in September, there will be:
- online enrolment
- support with learning on-site
- opportunities to address gaps in technical or practical knowledge or experience
- enhanced induction
- Information, Advice and Guidance support and taster sessions to help you make the right choice for your future career

Colleges are putting extra support in place to help new and returning students settle in, make friends and successfully progress with their studies. Most colleges have a dedicated Facebook page and would encourage young people to begin chatting prior to the start of the new term.
Starting a Higher Education course?
If you are due to begin a Higher Education course at your local college, plans are in place to support your transition and to alleviate any concerns or anxieties.
