While we are the UK’s largest distributor of building materials, our business requires specialist roles to ensure it runs effectively and efficiently for us to support our customers and Data Scientists are one of them.

Meet George Brookes, one of our fantastic Data Scientists. We asked George to share a bit about his role at Travis Perkins plc.

What is your job role and what does it entail?

“I am a Data Scientist. A Data Scientist is a versatile professional who extracts insight from data using statistical analysis, machine learning, and domain expertise. Responsibilities include collecting and cleaning data, conducting exploratory analysis, and building predictive models. Proficiency in programming and communication is essential, and staying updated on evolving technologies is crucial for effective decision-making in diverse industries.”

How long have you worked at Travis Perkins plc and have you done any other roles before this?

“I have been working at my current company for 2 years and in the field of data science for 6+ years.”

Why did you want to work in the construction sector and how did you get into it?

“I wanted the chance to work as a Data Scientist in the construction industry. I wanted to be involved in optimising operations, improving risk management, and enhancing resource allocation. The role also includes cross-disciplinary collaboration and a focus on innovation, playing a pivotal role in improving project outcomes and advancing the construction sector. Specifically, Travis Perkins plc collects a lot of data. We collect data about products and building materials as well as customer and supplier transactions. This wide understanding of our customers gives us wealthy data sets for me to perform data science work on.

I have a background in Mathematics. I work as a data consultant and a Python developer before joining my current role.”

Would you recommend working in the construction industry and why?
