Join Youth Employment UK’s CEO Laura-Jane Rawlings who is Chair of The Youth Employability Conference 2022, online event that is taking on 23rd March. You will hear best practice strategies for reducing youth unemployment and discover the latest initiatives in addressing skills gaps and training.
Key topics on the agenda include addressing the impact of Covid-19 on youth unemployment, supporting disadvantaged young people to find work and local and education initiatives to improve job prospects. Participants will be able to share their challenges and solutions to improving youth employability through networking, practical case studies and innovative initiatives.
The economic impact of Covid-19 has had a significant effect on employment rates across the nation, with young people being one of the hardest hit groups. More than half of under-25 year olds were placed on furlough or lost their jobs, compared to one-third of people at other ages. Moreover, the crisis has compounded employment inequalities that already existed and has impacted vulnerable and marginalised groups even further. To help offset this, the Government launched the Kickstart Scheme and DWP Youth Employment Hubs as a means of getting young people back into employment.
With the economy and labour market beginning to recover, now is the chance to help improve employment outcomes and create opportunities for young people.
- Since the start of the pandemic, the number of young people in employment has fallen by 243,000, a 6% drop
- The number of people aged 18-24 claiming unemployment related benefits in July 2021 was 156,300 higher than in March 2020
- The inactivity rate for young people is 39.9%, down from 41.2% in the previous quarter, June-August 2021.
