At sea, as a Marine Engineer Submariner (MESM),
You will operate and maintain the nuclear reactor and all of its supporting systems to ensure its safe operation. You will also be responsible for operating and maintaining the propulsion and ship systems including electrical power generation and distribution systems, vital to the delivery of submarine missions.
When the submarine goes into action, you’ll be part of a damage-control and fire-fighting organisation capable of dealing with all submarine emergencies so that the submarine can still fight effectively.
In harbour, you will be part of a highly trained team of technicians, maintaining and repairing the complex nuclear systems and support equipment which ensure the continued safe operation of the Submarine.
At sea, as a Weapon Engineer Submariner (WESM),
You will be directly responsible for maintaining the availability of technologically advanced electronic equipment which is critical to the fighting ability of the Submarine be that from the Tactical Weapons System (Spearfish torpedoes and Tomahawk missiles) or the Strategic Weapons System (Trident missiles).
When the submarine goes into action, you could also be part of a damage-control and firefighting team capable of dealing with a wide variety of submarine emergencies so that the submarine can still fight effectively. In harbour, you will eventually lead a highly trained team of technicians to maintain and repair the equipment that forms the submarine’s complex weapon systems.
Your service will also include time at university to build upon your extensive submarine engineering education and gain a BEng (Hons) degree. As a qualified submariner, you’ll be part of an elite fighting force, respected throughout the world.

Desired qualifications
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent), including English Language, mathematics and at least one science.
There are 2 options for acceptable qualifications required in addition to the basic academic criteria above:
Option 1:
- A National Qualifications Framework Level 3 Diploma (with a minimum of a merit) in engineering discipline (or equivalent)
Option 2:
- At least 48 UCAS points in A-levels (or equivalent) in mathematics and a STEM based subject
