Disability and Special Education Needs

Birmingham Careers Service is a free and friendly support service providing careers information, advice and guidance to young people aged 16 to 19 who are not in education, employment or training (NEET). If a young person has a learning difficulty and/or disability then we can help them until they are 25. They are part of Birmingham City Council and they work alongside other local services too.

Birmingham City Council provides support for young people with special education needs or disability.

Birmingham Adult Education Service supports access to work courses for young people aged 18+

For young people over 25, BID services provide employment support

At Disability Resource Centre they work with disabled people, and those with long-term health conditions, to get them back into work.

Ambitious about Autism helps to support young people with Autism into employment.

BAME Support

Wellbeing Service

Flyer for the Be Active and Be Active Plus Programmes are FREE and delivered citywide by the Wellbeing Service. These are free schemes available to Birmingham residents offering a wide range of health and wellbeing activities like:

  • Swimming
  • Exercise classes
  • Gym sessions

These sessions would be ideal for citizens experiencing social isolation and/or those wishing to improve their fitness and mental wellbeing.

Smoking Cessation

Stop Smoking Service

The Smoking Cessation Service Specification is available at nearly three hundred GPs and local pharmacies that provide stop smoking support. Referring to a Pharmacy convenient to the service user via https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/directory/46/stop_smoking_services is the best referral option. E-cigarettes and liquid are available free of charge as part of the service.

Substance Misuse and Addiction

Aquarius – Young People’s (Up to 18) Substance Misuse

Offer specialist services to support children and young people who use substances or who are affected by a parent or carer’s substance use.

The support Aquarius may offer a Young person includes:

  • Information and advice about drinking and drug use
  • A drop-in service
  • 1:1 advice and interventions for children and young people using or at risking of using substances
  • Structured, evidence-based psychological and psychosocial interventions and support
  • Group work

Drug & Alcohol Service – Change Grow Live

What We Offer:

  • Advice and support
  • An experienced team of health and care staff, nurses and doctors
  • Employment and training support
  • Links to recovery coaches, community fellowships and support from people who share similar life experiences
  • A specialist family service
  • Connections to a range of local partners in the care sector and the NHS
  • Naloxone – a drug that can stop the effects of an overdose

Registration & Referrals: 

If you would like to speak to somebody about your alcohol or drug use you can contact the service directly by phone, email or by dropping in yourself.

Doctors, family members, carers and friends, or any other any other agency such as social services, can refer somebody into the service.
