Digital Marketing Apprenticeship Story – Hayden’s Journey With Youth Employment UK

Thinking about doing a Digital Marketing Apprenticeship? Hayden shares his experience with Youth Employment UK…

Youth Employment UK strives to be a youth-friendly employer, just like all the employers in our youth-friendly network. We would like to thank our Digital Marketing Apprentice Hayden for sharing his story to support any other young people who might be wondering if a Digital Marketing Apprenticeship is right for them…

How did you come across the apprenticeship?

My Apprenticeship is a Digital Marketing Level 3 course.

When I left school I still didn’t know for certain which career path I wanted to pursue. At the time I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to assist Youth Employment UK’s Content & Marketing Team with one of their summer campaigns. After being kept on to continue to assist the team, I found myself enjoying a lot of the work I was doing, eventually being offered the opportunity to apply for an apprenticeship role with Youth Employment UK.

After working with the Content & Marketing team for almost eight months I thought that the Level 3 Digital Marketing apprenticeship would be an ideal way to boost my skills and enable me to better help the team around me. The personal benefits are also a big factor, just having the qualification to put on my CV will be a massive help.

What new skills have you been learning on the job so far? Have you been given any responsibilities of your own?

After recently starting my apprenticeship I received an unbelievable amount of help from both Baltic (the apprenticeship provider) and Youth Employment UK. I have already taken part in an SEO/Keyword workshop to help me develop a basic understanding of how I can take my work to the next level.

I have also been given a bigger role within one of the regions we create and post content for. This has given me a greater understanding of responsibilities and how to manage them as well as how I can communicate both internally and externally effectively.

You’ve been mixing in-office work with remote working (from home). What kind of help do you get from the organisation with remote working? Any remote working tips for other apprentices?

I work from home a LOT. However, Youth Employment UK does an amazing job to ensure communication is maintained even when remote working. For example, each morning and afternoon we join a virtual meeting to discuss what we will be/have been working on during the day – this is a great way for everyone to keep up to date with what’s going on within the organisation.

I would say a very important thing about remote working is making sure you know the best way to contact whoever you might need.

What do you look forward to most about the apprenticeship programme?

The apprenticeship programme has a module entitled ‘The Principles of Coding’. I only have a very, very basic knowledge of code and so I’m very excited about learning more during this part of the course.

Do you feel more optimistic about your future options and prospects? If so, why?

I feel like the apprenticeship will significantly boost my skills and confidence, especially with the fact that I can put the qualification on my CV once completed and spruce it up a bit!

Any top tips for apprentices just starting their programme?

Do not be afraid or embarrassed to ask for anything! Both your organisation and the apprenticeship provider are in place to support you. Becoming stuck or not knowing something and not seeking help/advice will only hinder your apprenticeship progress.

Any Top Tips For Apprentices completing their EPA soon?

I think the most important thing to remember when completing your End Point Assessment is to not let it stress you out, it’s really not as big and scary as you might think. Make sure you look through all of the revision/preparation materials so you have a clear plan going in and definitely don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re feeling stuck – both your employer and apprenticeship provider will be there to support you.

Good luck to everyone going through their EPA’s!

Any top digital marketing tips for new apprentices learning the ropes?

Perseverance is key. The moment you are first assigned a task or given a brief can be daunting but the more you work at the task, with the help of your team, the more comfortable you will be when completing future tasks. Do not give up if something looks too difficult, remember to seek help when you need it from your organisation or apprenticeship provider.
