Thinking about doing an apprenticeship? See what our very own apprentice Georgia has to say about earning and learning.
What apprenticeship are you completing?
I am currently completing a Level 6 Apprenticeship in Digital Marketing. It is a BA Hons Degree course and I study at university a few days a month while also working full time with Youth Employment UK.
This is my second apprenticeship. I first completed a Level 3 Apprenticeship which was a great stepping stone into a degree.
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I always knew that I didn’t want to go to university. I did want to get a degree, but not through the traditional route that was pushed towards me at school.
I found the benefits of apprenticeships more appealing. An apprenticeship allows me to work in a real job where I can gain experience, boost my skills, and get paid. In my degree course, I still get to go to university where I can talk and learn with my peers and lecturers too.
Choosing to do an apprenticeship as a way to progress in my learning and career was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?
When I made my own choice about whether to do an apprenticeship or something else, I weighed up my different options. There are so many pathways and each one has pros and cons, especially for different types of learners or the job you want.
For example, after completing A-Levels, I wanted to get a degree. However, I didn’t want to go to university and I wanted to stay closer to home. I was also interested in getting a job but I really wanted to continue my education too. That’s why an apprenticeship was such a great option for me.
I recommend that you really think about what it is you want to do, now and in the future, and compare how different pathways can get you there. Also, get advice from your parents, friends, teachers, or a careers advisor; they might have some insight that can help you decide.
Looking back, what do you wish you’d known about apprenticeships?
I wish I had known just how many apprenticeships there are out there. I used to think that there was limited choice in what you could study and that it was only for careers that needed practical learning like engineering. However, it’s absolutely not true.
There are hundreds of different apprenticeships in almost every industry you can think of. Whatever work you’re interested in, there is likely an apprenticeship that can support your learning and development.
