To get the most out of this activity, make sure you are signed up to Create Your Future. It’s a six-week online course designed to help you boost your skills and careers confidence in a way that brings positive change into your life.
Activity: Think about how you could use your life skills to wow your future boss
This week, we’re going to help you deep dive into some careers you might really enjoy. You will pick a career you like the sound of, read a bit of useful info about that career, then think about how you could use the life skills you ALREADY have to wow the boss and make your mark in the first week of doing that job.

Step 1: Use the Careers Hub to explore a range of careers by sector (e.g. creative and design jobs, or digital jobs, or childcare and education jobs). For each career (e.g. camera operator or nursery worker) you’ll see lots of information about how to get into a job like that, including advice on what to study and how to build experience from school onwards.
I’m ready! Take me to the Careers HubStep 2: From the careers you find, pick one job you think you’d enjoy doing. There’s no pressure. Just pick a job you think you like the sound of, at least at this moment in your life.
Step 3: Picture yourself in your first week in this new job. Imagine that you are still learning the ropes but you have really nice people and managers who are going to make you feel comfortable and explain to you exactly what to do and how to do it.
The top life and work skills are are:
- communication
- teamwork
- problem solving
- self-belief (positive attitude)
- self-management (organisation and taking the initiative).
How could you use each skill to help you shine (and get a warm feelgood glow) in your first week at work? See if you can think of an example for each skill!
