This Young Professional activity for Week 4 of the Create Your Future programme will help you get connected through work experience and networking for beginners.
Week 4: Getting Connected
Are you ready for this week’s Young Professional activity to help you Create Your Future? Let’s get started!
To get the most out of this activity, make sure you are signed up to Create Your Future. It’s a six-week online course designed to help you boost your skills and careers confidence in a way that brings positive change into your life.
Activity: Find a virtual opportunity to gain new networks and experience. Ready, steady, GO!
About networking: Networking sounds very boss-level and established. Don’t worry! It’s really just about connecting with people who can help you on your journey. Networking, or connecting with people who can help, is something you can do at any age.
You can network with teachers, leaders in a volunteering group, friends of parents and guardians, and even your own peers and friends (and friends-of-friends). Networking also includes people in your online social communities who share the same interests and goals.
You are networking when you do work experience or a work placement, because you are showing possible future employers your energy and enthusiasm. They could give you a job one day – or recommend you to someone who can.
Work experience is all about getting a taste of the world of work, often through a work placement with an employer or an internship that suits your age and education/experience level. These days, you can do a lot of work experience online, so where you live isn’t an issue and you don’t have to spend any money on travel. You can often fit it around your studies/work/holidays, too.
Your challenge is to search online for the following opportunities:
- Virtual work experience
- Online work experience
- Virtual work placement
- Online work placement
Just type one of the phrases above (like “virtual work experience”) into a search engine to see what’s out there.
If you know what area of work you might be interested in, you can add that to your search. For example, you could search for “marketing virtual work experience” or “engineering virtual work experience”.
You will find lots of opportunities online!
At this stage, all you have to do is note down up to three opportunities you like the sound of that you think you could do.
You don’t have to apply for them. That’s up to you. But now you know what’s out there, and you know how to look online for opportunities when you feel ready to add some exciting (virtual) work experience to your CV.
Congratulations! You’ve completed your Young Professional activity for Week 4 of Create Your Future!
