You’ll be paid for doing a job for 30 hours per week and get time off to complete your studies. Your manager can help you to decide what working patterns are best for you. You’ll also have the chance to learn from the British Library’s experienced staff and work with other apprentices in different areas.
As a member of staff at the British Library you receive a number of benefits and you can apply for an NUS apprenticeships card which provides you with discounts for many well-known shops and restaurants.

Useful skills for a library apprenticeship:

  • customer service skills to help you inform and inspire visitors to the British Library

How Do You Get These Skills?

Vocational qualifications and work experience will help you build these skills over time. Top Skills-boosting Tips

A visitor’s seemingly simple request for a particular book or information might have a whole life story behind it, so it’s good to aim for sensitivity and understanding to others – because everyone has a story at the British Library! You never know what kind of life journey they are on.

It can also help to aim to be patient and calm, even if it’s hard to meet a customer’s specific needs, or if you’re not sure of something. As an apprentice library assistant you are still learning, and you don’t have to know everything at once.
