What are the steps for becoming an audit compliance officer, unfortunately there are not specific course that incorporate auditing or compliance but there are other options we can still explore that will still be relevant. Most companies are looking for someone who has gained an undergraduate degree, usually achieving a 2:1 as a minimum, the relevant subjects would be law, business, economics, or accountancy. The logic behind this is because as an audit compliance officer these are the departments that will heavily be involved in the work that you do, so if you understand the department your job will be a lot easier.

There are outside qualifications that you can earn, although though are not necessary or compulsory it is a good opportunity to take as it will set you apart from other people. The International Compliance Association, or the ICA as they are often referred to offer qualifications and certifications in relation to compliance. If you are fortunate to already be in employment and you have decided to pursue this line of work depending on the company, you work for it is possible that they may invest in you and pay for these courses as part of your development plan if it is beneficial to the company, so it is always worth looking into this first. ICA’s most popular courses are:

Diploma in Governance, Risk, and compliance: This certification is the equivalent of a level 6 qualification and takes 9 months to complete and can be completed online or face-to-face whichever fits your needs. There are three different modules, the first module is about the need for regulations and their history. Module two understanding behavioural compliance, how you can use corporate governance to benefit a business and finally module three where you would focus on risk management, compliance functions and the role of a compliance professional.

Certificate in Compliance: This certification will give you an introduction and an understanding on regulations and how they work in practice.

The ICA have their own website where there is more information available to you, further information can be found on what these courses entail and the entry requirements for each course. They also offer free advice regarding their courses where you can sit in on some sessions with the tutor of that course and you can ask your questions and find the right course for you.
