Are you on benefits? Do you need extra financial support with broadband and mobile deals? New social tariffs from broadband providers could help.
What is the broadband social tariff?
A new service run by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will allow your internet service providers to see if you are eligible for extra financial support because you’re on benefits.
The good news is that this can only happen with your permission, so you can decide if you want to opt in or not.
The Government has called on all broadband providers to offer and promote social tariffs. This is what they call discounted broadband and mobile deals for people on Universal Credit and other benefits.
The scheme is already supported by Virgin Media O2 who have announced that they will use the system to verify eligible customers signing up to their Essential Broadband tariff. The company will also waive early termination fees for those moving from existing tariffs.
How could the broadband social tariff benefit you as a young person on benefits?
In some cases you or your household could save over £100 a year.
The new system will make getting discounts easier if you’re on benefits, because you won’t have to prove you’re eligible every month to your broadband provider.
Remember – you don’t have to opt in unless you want to. It’s your call.
