How to kick start your job search

Once you’ve left school, College or even University, your next step is to enter the big wide world of work. But where do you start?

The most common practice is to use job boards. Job boards are websites where employers or recruiters can post job adverts. This will often contain information on what role that particular employer is looking to fill. Along with the job adverts the employers will post an explanation on what type of person they are looking for, whether that person needs any previous experience in a similar role, or if the candidate needs any qualifications.

The job advert should also contain a list of duties / roles that you would be performing if you got the job, so make sure that you read all the roles on the advert and be sure you are happy to do all of them before applying!

The major job boards are swamped with hundreds of thousands of job adverts. Ranging from stock brokers to chefs, Electricians to nurses. You get the picture!

These job boards cater to a huge variety of different roles, but they also cater to a high range of experience needed for these jobs, offering no real search option to filter jobs that only match your experience. Leaving you with only one option, and that is to use the search option ‘no experience’ or ‘little experience’ and hope for the best.

I personally used this method, and it took me over 8 months, searching on over 17 different job boards and well over 400 applications before I managed to get my foot in the door.

The biggest problem is these job boards have never provided any real sort of focus on assisting young people in finding work.

The job board is catered to assist you in kick-starting your career. Employers who post job adverts on our website must specify the level of experience that is needed for a role, this being a maximum of 6 months. Meaning you will be able to easily filter out the job adverts that cater to you’
