The All-Party Parliamentary Group will begin its third series inquiry into the barriers young people face who are furthest from the labour market on the 19th April 2017.

88,000 (15.8%) people aged 16-24 had been unemployed for over 12 months at November 2016-January 2017.  The number of young people who are long-term unemployed is decreasing, however, if the government is to reach its goal of zero youth unemployment it is important to address the challenges of long-term youth unemployment.

The scope of the inquiry:

This inquiry seeks to understand the challenges facing this group of young people, but also to understand the barriers facing young people who are hidden from this picture and are unemployed and not seeking support from Job Centre Plus.

The inquiry hopes to better understand what service or programmes are having the greatest impact in engaging and moving young people furthest from the labour market into education, employment or training. 

Meeting dates:

This series will run three meetings – 19th April, 21st June and 19th July. At this final meeting the report following the inquiry will be presented to the Minister for Employment Robert Halfon (invited). Expert organisations have been invited to provide evidence at each of the meetings.

Submissions:

External organisations are invited to provide a response to the inquiry and attend the meetings. Where organisations are attending meetings we encourage you to bring with you a young person or employer from your network to allow them to share their personal experiences of this topic.
