A new degree apprenticeship in eye imaging? It’s a great time to explore careers in eyecare! #CreateYourFuture

A new degree apprenticeship offers fresh vocational options in eye imaging. The University of Gloucester’s BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science Practitioner Apprenticeship (Ophthalmic Imaging) course is a distanced blended learning programme.

Ophthalmic imaging uses powerful technology to capture vital information from patient examinations. It is essential for diagnosing, treating and monitoring eye conditions. Images play a central role in disease screening, teaching, clinical trials and telemedicine.

Ophthalmic imaging technicians work in hospital eye services. There is a national shortage of qualified technicians so there are plenty of opportunities.

The three-year course gives students the flexibility to plan their learning around other commitments. Online teaching materials are combined with regular opportunities for face-to-face learning. Learners will study a variety of healthcare science topics while gaining practical experience at work, from anatomy and physiology to interpreting data.

Once qualified, learners can join the Healthcare Science Practitioner register and go on to work as ophthalmic imagers in the NHS or private sector.

Tracy Longden-Thurgood, course lead in healthcare science, said: “Completing the apprenticeship degree programme will provide graduates with the knowledge, skills and clinical behaviours needed to enable this specialist workforce to deliver high-quality patient care for years to come.”

Student Helen Hobman said: “I applied for this course to be involved in something exciting and unique. I wanted to be involved in the first steps towards recognising the work of the ophthalmic imaging technician.”

Entry to the course is by interview. You will need 112 UCAS tariff points:

  • BBC at A levels with one subject preferably in a science
  • Or DMM at BTEC to include six units in a science or social science subject
  • Or a merit in a T-Level in a science or health-related subject.

English Language or Literature and Maths Grade 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) are normally required.
