A new survey of 4,000 13-16-year-olds for BBC Bitesize as part of National Careers Week reveals the top ten jobs teenagers want when they are older.
The poll also asked what they wanted to do after they leave school and what would be the most important thing for them in a job.
Top Jobs
The survey asked what young people wanted to do when they were older, here are the top ten choices:
- Engineer
- Teacher
- Doctor
- Veterinarian
- Lawyer
- Football
- Police Officer
- Computer Scientist
- Nurse
- Architect
After secondary school
The survey also asked what young people were hoping to do once they left secondary school.
- 60% of young people say they hope go on to higher education after leaving school
- 16% said they’d like to do an apprenticeship
- 11% said they’d prefer to go straight into work
- 6% wanted to start their own business
The most important thing in a job
The survey asked what the most important thing was in a job, the most popular answers were ‘feeling good about what you do’ and ‘happiness’, the full results are below.
- 28% “To feel good about what you do”
- 26% “Happiness”
- 23% “Money”
- 17% “To feel like you are helping people”
- 4% “To have little or no stress”
- 2% “Leisure time”
