The Youth Voice Census is now open for young people aged 11-30 to share their views and here are the reasons why it’s important for you as an employer to share the survey with young people in your network.
1. Better understand the experiences of young people in today’s system
We ask young people about the services and support they receive in their communities and through their education journey.
Why should this matter to you? Not understanding the current youth employment landscape can lead to creating unintended barriers for lots of young people.
For example, in the 2023 Youth Voice Census, we learnt that due to the lasting effects and disruption of the pandemic, young people are struggling to find quality work experience opportunities. However, employers still require work experience for their early career vacancies.
This causes a real disconnect between young people and opportunities.
By better understanding where young people are at we can help employers to create more inclusive and supportive early career opportunities that support all young people, everywhere.
2. Build your EDI knowledge by exploring the differences between young people with protected characteristics
The Youth Voice Census is answered by thousands of young people and we provide analysis based on different characteristics. Understanding that not all young people experience life in the same way, so exploring the experiences of young people from different ethnic backgrounds, social mobility, who are LGBTQ+, who have special education needs, disabilities or are care experienced young people we can help employers think about the differences between young people and what adjustments they may need to be successful on their journey to work.
3. Listen to the next generation of talent
It is easy to make assumptions about a whole generation of young people, but where do these assumptions come from and are they always correct? Do we really understand what the priorities are of the future workforce? And how do our businesses need to adapt to compete for talent?
Headline news may suggest a generation of snowflakes, or that young people only want to work for “green” companies and that pay is the priority? Can all these things be true?
Each year 1000s of 11-30 year olds complete the Youth Voice Census, allowing us to understand what really matters to young people when they are thinking about their first career or first employer.
Get ahead of real youth voice insight and understand how your organisation can meet the needs of future talent.
4. Understand trends and sector appeal
We take a deep dive into what sectors and careers appeal to young people and how they feel about employers. Our data will show you what the next generation of talent are looking for and where their interests are. For example, last year:
- Young people were most interested in creative careers (51.3%), with digital (38.5%), health and science (34.7%) and business and administration (30.6%) being popular options.
- 33.1% thought employers were supportive or hiring young people, with 40.3% neutral and 26.7% feeling employers were unsupportive.
5. It’s based on real data
With more than 4000 young people regularly completing the Youth Voice Census and 6 years worth of data, it has become the most comprehensive tool for employers and policy makers who want to understand young people and their needs.
At a time of constant change and uncertainty, it is critical that young people get to share their experiences on the issues that affect them. And it is then even more important that employers and policy makers adapt to the real-time data coming through. When we do this we can have a positive experience on the lives of young people across the UK.
